do not think that the handling problem is so much related to the Savage's lightness, as it is related to the quick steering. If you mount a large windshield on to the bars, you will have even more trouble in buffeting winds!
I have a Yamaha Virago that is not that much heavier then the Savage; it has very slow steering. The Virago is much more stable, because of the slow steering.
Of course the Savage does figure "8" maneuvers with hardly any effort while the Virago is hard to control in an obstacle course.
